Now, with the CircuitWorks add-in available in all levels of SOLIDWORKS (Premium, Professional, and Standard), anyone can open eCAD files.
Take this IDX file, for instance, provided by our friends at Cadence.
CircuitWorks has a completely overhauled user interface with 2025, including a new look and better scaling to 4K. With just an IDX file, CircuitWorks can build an entire 3D model. The assembly uses volume representations of components, keep-outs, cuts, and more.
In the concept stage, as I lock in my enclosure dimensions and mounting points, this is all the mechanical representation I require.
But, what about a more detailed circuit board model?
Here's another IDX file. This one is a more complex example (also provided by our friends at Cadence). Note: You can now buy Cadence OrCAD X or Allegro X from GoEngineer.
With SOLIDWORKS 2025, IDX files expand a whole new level of capability.
In this example, I want to show the ability to model copper trace geometry across all layers. That means top, bottom, and internal trace data.
You can see the CircuitWorks tree has all the items that can be imported.
Let's build the 3D CAD model of this PCB. Opening the board part file, we can see all of the copper traces. This type of collaboration through IDX fully enables downstream FEA simulation, features, design histories, and notes.
