Creating Custom Scan Paths in Artec Studio 18

Article by Jonathan Rodriguez on Nov 05, 2024

Automated scanning can be a great benefit to inspection and reverse engineering workflows. The less operator intervention required to complete a proper scan, the better. The Artec Micro II is an accurate, automated, turntable-style scanner, and Artec Studio 18 software pairs brilliantly with it.

The Micro II moves through a set of swing and rotation angles defined by the scanning path. Artec Studio includes five generic paths, simple and complex, for small or large parts, and rotation only. The path defines how many frames are captured.

While the default scan paths cover most use cases, sometimes users may find that they have to reorient the scan and capture additional frames to fill in missed areas. If users find that they are regularly doing this, though Artec has a few extra tools that provide a solution.

The first option is to create a copy of the default scanning path and program new frames by inputting a swing and rotation angle for each additional frame.

The second option is to define a path for the scanner to travel through and the interval at which the Micro II captures a frame. This can be done with the path sequence tool. Here, you can define the starting and ending swing angle as well as the interval. The range is -180 degrees to 90 degrees.

The range, combined with the interval that the arm travels at, defines how many positions the scanner will stop at. The rotation interval defines how many sectors of the turn table the scanner stops at.

With all 4 inputs defined, Artec Studio will display how many total frames will be captured. The user can then remove or add additional frames, but this creates a good starting point for easily scanning similar parts.
