SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation - Noise Prediction

Article by GoEngineer on Nov 11, 2017

SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation 2017 SP 3 introduced the capability of noise prediction.  This allows the user to estimate noise generated by turbulent flow.  Two new result parameters are now available – Acoustic power and Acoustic Power Level.

Noise Prediction

SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation uses the Proudman formulae for the noise prediction calculation.  It allows for the estimation of broadband noise that turbulence generates.  The assumptions made in the Proudman derivation are as follows (see Fig. 1):

  • High Reynolds number flow
  • Low Mach number flow
  • Isotropic turbulence
  • Zero mean motion

Results

The solver automatically performs a noise prediction calculation without user input.  The noise prediction result parameters can be enabled through the Customize Parameter List dialogue window.  These parameters can be used in the following result types: cut plots, surface plots, isosurfaces, flow trajectories, point parameters, surface parameters, volume parameters, and XY plots.
